Helping Children to Love the Dentist

Children aren’t born not liking the dentist. Somehow, somewhere along the line, a dislike creeps in. At Balbriggan Dental and Facial Clinic, we want to avoid that.

Our children’s dentists build a relationship with children, working to their sense of curiosity, explaining everything in a friendly environment. The sooner a child comes to see us, the better as they are immediately put at ease. What we’ve found with children is that this sense of comfort that they receive helps with the next visit. The expectation of the next visit is a pleasant experience rather than one of dread.

Maintaining good healthy teeth and good dental practice is key from a young age. At Balbriggan Dental and Facial Clinic, we want to prevent problems. We advise on a good routine of dental hygiene, identifying and fixing potential future issues and teaching children to care about their dental health

Some questions that are often asked in particular to Children’s Dentistry

1. What age should children be for their first dental check up?
The answer is really as soon as the first set of teeth come up. While they will ultimately fall out, they often give an indication of how the adult teeth may grow up.

2. What’s the next best age if I didn’t bring them?
Many parents have other things on their mind when baby teeth start coming up. We get it. We’re parents ourselves. However, the sooner you can start bringing your child to the dentist, the better. Often children will listen more to a dentist about caring for their teeth and good brushing technique than a parent.

Issues such as soft teeth or fissure sealant may help with cavity prevention. So the sooner the age, the better.

3. What will I do if my child really has a fear of the dentist?
Bring them to Balbriggan Dental and Facial Clinic. Our children’s dentists are specialists in dealing with children and are trained to put them at ease.

We are one of the few dental practices in the country who specialise in dentistry sedation. We can use inhalation sedation for children to alleviate the anxiety if they continue to be anxious. It’s safe for use and gives the child a more relaxed feeling, like day dreaming. It does make treatments more comfortable for children.
